What happens when Gmail clips your email

Gmail clips emails that have a message size larger than 102KB, which can be frustrating for users. Clipping disrupts the styling of the email and can sometimes have unexpected effects on the content, styling, and tracking of your email.

Example:

However, there are ways to prevent Gmail from clipping messages.

How to prevent Gmail from clipping messages

To avoid this, we recommend keeping emails concise, short, and to the point. This will not only prevent clipping but may also lead to better conversions.

1) Send a test email to your internal team to check that Gmail is not cutting off

  • Check out how to send a test email HERE

2) Remove any unnecessary content

  • Emails and websites are different things. To keep your emails easy to read, it's best to keep them short and sweet, don't clutter with too much information.
  • If you're not sure how big your email is, try sending it to a test address first.
  • And if you want to make changes to an email, it's always a good idea to make a copy first - duplicate your email.
  • Also, if you need to resize an image for your email, make sure it's between 600px and 650px for the best results.

3) Change the subject lines of your test emails

  • Gmail tends to combine emails with the same subject lines into one email. This may result in the test email being clipped by Gmail if you send several test emails for the same email. For testing purposes, change the subject line or delete the previous test emails in your inbox, and then send the test email again.

4) Remove the extra code created when you copy & paste content

  • If you pasted content from an outside source, such as a website or word processing program, then it is possible that extra, hidden formatting code was added to your campaign's underlying code. Paste as plain text to remove the formatting style used in the source. This will prevent unwanted code from getting added to your email.
