Before you get started

How to set up Google Analytics in Google Tag Manager

  • Choose "Tag Configuration" and select "Google Analytics: Universal Analytics" or "Google Analytics: GA4" depending on your setup.

  • Select the Google Analytics: GA4 Configuration tag type and under Measurement ID click the button that looks like a lego brick with a ‘+’ sign in it
  • Configure the tag with your Google Analytics tracking ID.

  • Choose the Google Analytics Settings variable type and add your Google Analytics tracking code into the Tracking ID field. Then click Save.
  • Set the "Track Type" to "Page View" if you want to track page views or choose "Event" if you want to track specific actions as conversions.

Example of a GA4 tracking ID variable configuration

  • You should be back at the Tag Configuration window. At the bottom of this window you will find the Tag Triggering section. Click anywhere in this section to set up a trigger

How to find Google Analytics for tracking Google Tag

  1. Access Google Analytics: Log in to your Google Analytics account. If you don't have one, you'll need to create it.

  2. Navigate to Admin Settings: Once logged in, you'll usually find an "Admin" tab at the bottom-left corner. Click on it.

  3. Select the Appropriate Account: Under the "Account" column, select the account to which you want to add the tracking.

  4. Choose Property: Under the "Property" column, choose the property for which you want to set up tracking. If you don't have a property yet, you'll need to create one.

  5. Tracking Info: Look for the "Tracking Info" section. Here, you'll find different tracking options. Click on "Tracking Code" or a similar option.

  6. Retrieve Tracking ID: You'll see a tracking ID or a tracking code HTML snippet. This is what you'll need to implement in your website's code. Copy the tracking ID or snippet.

  7. Implement Tracking Code: Now, go to your website's code. If you're using Google Tag Manager, you'll add this code snippet there. If not, you'll typically add it just before the closing </head> tag on every page of your website.

  8. Verify Implementation: Once you've implemented the tracking code, go back to Google Analytics, and in the "Admin" section, under "Property," click on "Tracking Info" again. Here, you can verify if the tracking is receiving data.

View conversion reports

Once GA has collected some conversion events for you, you can generate conversion reports.
Navigate to Reports > Life cycle > Engagement > Conversions to view the conversion event overview report.

Define triggers

Triggers determine when tags should fire. Create triggers for specific actions you want to track, like button clicks, form submissions, or page visits.

  • Click on "Triggers" and then "New."
  • Choose the appropriate trigger type based on the action you want to track.
  • Configure the trigger conditions.
  • Save your trigger.

Associate Tags with Triggers:

  • Go back to your tag configuration.
  • Click on "Triggering" and select the trigger(s) you created in the previous step.
  • Save your tag.

Test and Publish:

  • Use the GTM Preview mode to test your setup.
  • Once you're satisfied with your setup, publish your container changes.

View Google Analytics Data:

  • Log in to your Google Analytics account.
  • Navigate to the reporting section where you want to view your data, such as Real-Time, Audience, Acquisition, Behavior, or Conversions.
  • You'll see data related to the events or page views you've set up to track through GTM.
